Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a serious medical condition affecting millions of people worldwide. It consists of alternating periods of mania and depression. As a result, it often appears as mood swings, which can at times be quite abrupt.

The symptoms for the manic phase, which may last from days to months, often include elevated mood, inflated self-esteem, poor temper control, recklessness, easy distractibility, agitation or irritation, and little need for sleep. The depressed phase on the other hand features many extreme symptoms of major depression, among which are fatigue, persistent sadness, suicidal thoughts, fluctuations in sleeping or eating patterns, withdrawal from friends and hobbies, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, and difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions.

Bipolar disorder affects men and women equally, and usually surfaces in adolescence or early adulthood. Though its exact cause is unknown, recent research coupled with new advances in treatment mean that today help exists for those who suffer from the disorder.
